The auditions of the first ever Mr and Miss Albinism were held on September 24 at Beauty Point in Nairobi.

The initiative, which aims at promoting self-awareness of PWAs in the society essentially to stop vices like discrimination and stigmatisation, had a good turn out as organisers gear up for the competition which will be held on October 21 at the Carnivore.

“Persons with albinism are extremely excited about this first ever Mr and Miss Albinism. It has never happened before and they have an opportunity to showcase what they got and I can assure you it’s something,” nominated MP Isaac Mwaura for Special Interest Group and National Coordinator of Albinism Society of Kenya said in an interview with The Star newspaper.

The event will also help build their self-esteem as most PWAs live with low self-esteem due to the difference in colour and the many challenges they face e.g. discrimination.
“We need to increase levels of awareness,” said the MP

“Give children a chance to attend school, provide sunscreen lotion and skin cancer treatment, improve access to eye care services especially prescription glasses, open job placement opportunities including self-employment, lobby for better policies and most importantly, increase the self-esteem of persons with albinism.”
